Ambassador David Dunford speaks with SISMEC researcher Christina Sciabarra about his new book with Ghassan Muhsin Hussein entitled “Talking to Strangers.”
He discusses the challenges of joining the Coalition Provisional Authority which served as the occupational administration after the American invasion of Iraq in 2003. Tasked with rebuilding the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunford describes the challenges of rebuilding amidst chaos, reintegrating Iraqis back into the government in the wake of de-Ba`athification, and the commitment and heroism of some of his Iraqi partners. He addresses the issues Iraq faces today and the future interactions between Iraq and the United States. This interview provides a unique insight into the obstacles of rebuilding a state as an outsider and the challenges of talking to strangers.
